Teaching Pastor Job Description

Principle Functions 

Through his teaching ministry and leadership, the Teaching Pastor will strengthen the Parkhills Baptist Church (PBC) body by “equipping the saints for the work of ministry, to build up the body of Christ, until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of God’s Son, growing into maturity with a stature measured by Christ’s fullness” (Eph. 4:12-13).  

Acting as visionary leader, he works collaboratively with pastors and staff, implementing church ministries to accomplish a shared vision for the growth and maturing of the church body.  

He will stay spiritually sensitive to the Holy Spirit through prayer and Bible study to confidently shepherd the church with love and compassion.

  • Refrains from participation in unbiblical activities 

 

Qualifications 

  • Possesses a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as evidenced by a spiritually healthy lifestyle 
  • Exhibits a strong commitment to Scripture with a deep biblical knowledge 
  • Communicates effectively as a gifted expositor and teacher of Scripture 
  • Meets scriptural requirements particularly as defined in 1 Tim 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9 
  • Demonstrates the ability to work collaboratively with church staff and volunteers 
  • Demonstrates the ability to lead staff and the church in pursuit of a common vision 
  • Demonstrates a foundation in biblical languages 
  • Supports the Baptist Faith and Message 2000 
  • Has served a minimum of five years on church staff (preferably in a leadership position) 
  • Holds a master’s degree from an accredited seminary (Master of Divinity strongly preferred) 
  • Passes criminal and financial background checks 

 

Responsibilities 

  • Shepherd PBC by fostering spiritual maturity, service, and unity in our love of Christ Jesus  
  • Lead the church in an effective program of evangelistic ministry 
  • Oversee the preaching and teaching ministry of the church including preaching during regular services and special events 
  • Prepare primarily expository sermons and Bible studies applicable to people’s lives to facilitate spiritual growth 
  • Work directly with the staff (pastors and ministers) to plan and conduct worship services and oversee the implementation of ordinances 
  • Collaborate with and lead the pastoral team in building and effectuating a church vision aligned with PBC mission and values  
  • Along with PBC pastors, actively engage in pastoral care and personally invest in church members 
  • Maintain regular in-person office hours 
  • Actively support the ministries and programs of PBC  
  • Maintain and nurture open, candid two-way communications with deacons, church committees, and church staff  
  • Willing to partner with churches and organizations throughout San Antonio to further the Gospel 
  • Willing to cooperate with the programs and activities sponsored by the San Antonio Baptist Association, The Southern Baptists of Texas Convention, and the Southern Baptist Convention while keeping the church informed of denominational development
